How to get rid of fleas

Fleas can transmit disease and cause tapeworm, so getting rid of fleas on your pet is important for a healthy pet and a healthy home. Fleas generally prefer warm and humid conditions. Follow these steps to help your pet and learn how to get rid of fleas.

1. Vacuum everything including upholstered furniture, carpets, cracks in the floor, bare floors, and use the attachments to get in the corners, behind doors, and anywhere else that dust collects. This will pick up most of the eggs, but larvae will latch onto carpet fibers and stick around. After vacuuming, immediately remove the vacuum bag and seal it in a plastic bag. This bag can then be put into the freezer to kill any fleas and be reused later.

2. Spray carpets, rugs, floors and places your pet sleeps with a flea surface spray, flea bomb or fogger that kills flea eggs, larvae and emerging adult fleas. Check the label of sprays for active ingredients. Use one that contains IGR (Insect Growth Regulator).  Make sure you get into every nook and cranny and pay special attention around skirting boards and under rugs and furniture.

4. Try herbs such as pennyroyal and mint to get rid of fleas. You can crush dried herbs and sew little bags for them. Leave these in the pet’s sleeping area. Or use essential oils and sprinkle the oil on pet bedding. A little pennyroyal or eucalyptus oil added to a normal pet shampoo can also be a great flea deterrent/killer. Be sure to follow the instructions carefully for essential oils.
