How to Play Chess - There is a very important thing you should know: practice makes perfect! This is a rule that applies to almost everything in life, including chess. If you are an enthusiastic beginner you could probably miss out on this important detail. So, the best way you can learn chess is by playing chess, but not before studding a little bit.
How to Play Chess - Normally, pawns can only move forward one space, but the first time a pawn is moved, it may move forward one or two spaces. Pawns may only move forward. If another piece is in front of it, the pawn cannot move or attack the blocking piece. The exception is when the pawn attacks. Unlike any other piece, the pawn cannot attack through his normal movement, and has a unique move soley for attacking. The pawn can only attack a target if the target is one space diagonally-forward from the pawn. In other words, up one and to the left or right one. There is a special move in which the pawn may attack differently, but if you are just beginning chess, do not bother concerning yourself with the advanced moves yet.
How to Play Chess - Special moves: Castling; if the king and rook are both unmoved, if the king is not in check, if no pieces are between them, and if none of the squares between them are attacked (except b1 and b8) then the king may move two squares towards the rook and the rook may jump to the adjacent square to, and on the other side of, the king all in one go. En passent: If a pawn is on its fifth rank (ranks are rows of squares across the board) and an enemy pawn moves two squares forward to either of the adjacent squares to the pawn then the pawn on its fifth rank may (on its very next move, but not after its very next move) capture this enemy pawn as if the enemy pawn had only moved one square. Promotion: When a pawn reaches the eighth rank it must be exchanged for another piece (not a pawn or a king).
How to Play Chess - The rook is allowed to move forwards and backwards any number of squares, which is totally different from the bishop which moves diagonally any number of squares. The bishop can move forwards and backwards. The queen, on the other hand, is the most versatile piece on the playing board. The queen is able to move straight forward or straight backwards, along with diagonally. Therefore, the queen is less hindered by the available moves it can make.
How to Play Chess - The knight has a distinctive pattern in which it may move. The knight must move in an L shaped pattern in a direction. Therefore, the knight must move two squares to either side and one square up or down. Or, the knight must move two squares up or down and one square to either side. Unlike the other chess pieces which may be blocked , the knight can jump over pieces in order to move.
How to Play Chess - When you regret a move you just made, you may use the Undo Move button. Your opponent will be able to allow or reject the undo. You may wish to use this feature in friendly games, or when you accidentally move a piece onto the wrong square. Be aware, however, that your opponent is never obliged to accept your undo.
