Look through Your Journals
If you have been writing in a journal for many years, you will not be at a loss for topics to write about. Your journal will be filled with incidents in your life that had a certain meaning. Pick two or three memories from the journal and write about them. Describe how these incidents influenced your later life. It could be the death of someone you love or the birth of a child. It’s amazing how memories can flood a person. Sit down and write about 500 to 1000 words on those memories and what emotions they evoked.
The Importance of Geographical Location
Places are of vital importance in the story line. Show the reader what your “place” was like. Use descriptive words that will evoke an image or a scene. Describe what thoughts occurred to you then.
There are three good reasons for feeling this way. First, these experiences go against the tenets of science and the testimony of our own senses. Second, even if they are as they appear to be, they are so unusual (some would say paranormal) that they are best forgotten, and certainly, it is best not to mention them to anyone else. Third, they are considered by laypeople and most scientists who study them to be analogous to past events. In investigating them, emphasis is placed on determining exactly what happened and what may have caused the experience just as, say, one would observe an airplane crash and its possible physical determinants. They are seen as rooted to a particular time and place, and if one is lucky, these one-time events are not repeated.

Organizing And Categorizing
How you “categorize” your autobiography will depend in part on what information it contains. For example, if you are writing primarily about your childhood you’re going to take a different approach than if you were going to cover your whole life to the present. Let’s look at a couple of approaches and how the method of writing in How To Write Almost Anything can be applied to them. There are probably more ways to do it, but I’m only going to talk about two of them here.
Traditionally autobiographies were chronicles of events written by noteworthy public figures. But the new autobiography-also known as memoir-is a much more democratic form of literature. Anyone can write one. The focus is more on an aspect of life, rather than the entire life, and the emphasis is on storytelling, much as it is with fiction. You may choose to write about your childhood, a relationship, a particular adversity, your career, or perhaps some of your travel adventures. There is some aspect of everyone’s life worth telling about.
