First of all, roaches serve an important function, out of doors they break down organic waste. So your goal should not be to destroy them altogether, just to control them and keep them out of your home. Because roaches can carry disease causing organisms and can trigger allergic reactions, control is important for your health.
If you have a large population of cockroaches you\'re going to want to use roach poisons, dusts and sprays. Dusts and sprays are considered more effective for large cockroach infestations than baits because they not only cover a larger area, but there is no need to lure the cockroach to the poison itself. Many roach poisons, dusts and sprays, are what we call desiccants.
Some ways to get rid of Cockroaches
Use an insecticide spray. Get some insecticide that is labeled for use against cockroaches, and spray wherever cockroaches may be hiding or entering the house, including along walls, in cracks, and in vents. Keep pets out of the way when you are spraying, and follow all safety instructions on the product\'s label.
Use water jars. A simple and effective homemade way to lure and trap roaches is with a jar placed next to a wall, allowing the roaches to get in, but not escape. Any bait can be placed in the jar, including coffee grounds and water, but it also works with just plain water in dryer climates.
You can make your own insecticide by mixing equal parts of baking soda and powdered sugar and setting up a mock bait plate for the roaches. After mixing your sugar and soda, eave the mixture in a shallow dish where roaches have been seen or are known to travel. The combination of sugar and soda is lethal to the cockroach.
An effective homemade treatment to get rid of cockroaches is to make a live trap. A tall, wide-mouth canning jar makes a perfect trap. Apply a light coating of petroleum jelly to the inside of the jar up to the lip. You can use a long-handled paint brush to apply the jelly. Then, drop some food scraps into the jar. Tear off a small part of a paper towel and moisten it. Place that into the canning jar as well.
Test with glue pads. When you no longer see cockroaches around your house, buy some insect sticky pads. Place them near the cockroach entry and where you used to commonly see the cockroaches. If you find no roaches trapped on the paper after a few days, very likely you have gotten rid of your roaches!
