Skunks, as we all know from those old Pepe Le Pew cartoons, secrete a nasty odor. Science tells us that the skunk uses that for protection. In any case, the skunk has an anal scent glands that produces that funky skunk odor. “Anal” should pretty much give enough caution. But outdoor accidents do happen and just in case some skunk funk gets to you, here are some tips to get rid of it.
There are few things worse than the smell of skunk. If you live in a rural or even suburban area, populated by skunks, it\'s easier than you think to get sprayed by a skunk or have a pet sprayed by a skunk. But there are some things you can do to get rid of skunk smell, even left-over smell in your house. Read on to learn more.
Get rid of skunk smell
Step 1: Use Skunk-off, a chemical product available at most stores. Febreze is also effective for furniture and carpets, especially if you just tracked in a little bit of smell on shoes or clothing.
Step 2: Combine 1 part bleach with 9 parts water for areas like garages and porches that won\'t be stained by the bleach.
Step 3: Take any skunk smell clothes to a dry cleaner to ensure the smell is gone. You can try washing them (and only them) in your clothes machine, but expect to have to wash them several times to have any chance at getting rid of the smell.
Some other recommendations
They may mask the odor for a while but it will just come right back it does not get rid of the odor. But what most people don\'t know is that there is a recipe out there that will work to get rid of skunk smell. You take one quart of 3 percent hydrogen peroxide and ¼ cup of baking soda then one teaspoon of liquid soap or dish soap. Then you mix them all together and take a bath in it or if the spray is in your hair shampoo it. But be sure to use the mixture of this right away as soon as it is made because it can become unstable if left too long.
Rinse with tap water afterwards and repeat it if you have to. Do not use this mixture of your eyes if the spray has gotten in your eyes flush it with water ASAP. The temporary blindness should go away after 24 hours or it way last longer. However if it does not go away within 2 days you may need to go to your doctor to see if they spray has to caused any problems with your eyesight as being a permanent effect. It has not been known to happen but it could be a possibility.
