What are they?
The difference between a pimple and a boil is that a boil occurs deeper in the skin. A boil is an infection that can spread, so it can also get a lot larger and meaner. A boil is a pimple with problems.
Also known as an abscess, a boil is red, tender, and painful, appears suddenly, and proceeds through several stages, eventually becoming a pus-filled lump that comes to a head. Once it does that, it may burst and drain itself, or it may have to be surgically lanced. Bacteria are involved, and should the infection spread to adjacent skin, the lump may become several lumps that join to become a much larger lump, a furuncle (carbuncle), with accompanying chills and fever. It then needs medical attention.
Causes
Boils are usually caused by bacteria. There are times that the boil may break open causing the bacteria to spread to any nearby skin and then that can cause new boils to form. A painful red bump will appear and is filled with puss the boil can usually become very painful within a 24 hour period. Some people think that you get boils due to poor hygienic habits but this is not the case sure it can happen because of this but it is rarely the case. Usually boils are caused by stress, illness, allergies, poor eating habits.
Ways to get rid of boils
· Tempting as it may seem, avoid squeezing (or pinching) the boil. Remember that a boil is caused by bacteria. Squeezing it can just spread the infection.
· Boils usually go away in a week’s time. Allow a yellow/whitish center (referred to as the head) would emerge and open on its own. You may apply a heat pad 2-3 times a day to speed up this process.
· While this process is happening, keep the area very clean to prevent the infection from getting worse.
· Once it has opened care should be paramount. Apply saline solution to the boil. Clean it up with antibacterial cream or solution. Dry it up and keep it that way. There might be some blood but this is natural.
· If the boil persists or if it spreads or if you contract a fever, consult with your doctor.
To get rid of boils scientifically
Commercial cures for boils are no less effective than any medical treatment, at least for boils that haven\'t gotten out of hand or aren\'t caused by a staph infection. Most cures for boils are made up of either a mineral supplement consisting of vitamin A and vitamin E, or an antibacterial wash/compress. The key here to fighting an infected boil, especially if it\'s caused by staph, is to introduce some sort of antibiotic to the affected area. This is a problem for many over-the-counter solutions because antibiotics are usually kept under lock and key so that we don\'t all go taking antibiotics everyday, unwittingly producing some sort of super bacteria. So, aside from antibiotics present in the product, the cure for boils must have some other antibacterial properties. Some companies like DermaXum claim to have an antibiotic lotion, but one must be careful about using these "home made" boil cures.
