How to get rid of hiccups
Introduction
The cause and function of hiccups has baffled medical practitioners since the days of Hippocrates. Although, no one has figured out the exact science behind this "abrupt diaphragmatic contraction" till now.
Hiccups occur when the diaphragm, the muscle at the bottom of the lungs, begins to spasm. The spasm causes the vocal cords to close quickly, which results in the loud, distinctive sound associated with hiccups.
Triggers for Hiccups:
• Hot or spicy foods
• Strong fumes
• If you eat too fast, you can swallow air along with your food and end up with a case of the hiccups
• Pleurisy, pneumonia or damage to the area of the brain that controls the “hiccup center” may lead to more frequent outbreaks
Get rid of hiccups
It is fact that repeated swallowing works for mild cases of hiccups. Do this by holding your breath and repeatedly swallowing as fast as you can, or by slowly drinking down a beverage with as many swallows as is possible. It’s important that you hold your breath for as many gulps as you can. One can place a napkin over a glass of water can help moderate your speed.
Plug your nose and ears then swallow 20 times as fast as possible.
If you notice a friend has a case of hiccups, it is believed that your can ’scare’ them away. Sneak up on them and give ‘em a good jolt (Be careful though ;). What? They don’t have hiccups? Do it anyway!
Relax, sit still and breathe in deep, slow, rhythmic breaths expanding and contracting your lungs completely.
Distract yourself. Sing a song, go over your 7 times tables (7 x 1 = 7, 7 x 2 = 14, etc) until the hiccups are gone,
