Pigeon Identification
Commonly found in large flocks, pigeons are usually grey in color and can be identified by their pinkish-red feet and a pair of black bars visible on their wings. Their natural diets consist mainly of seeds and grains, but they will eat almost any scraps provided by humans (bread, French fries, crusts, garbage, etc).
Health Risks and Property Damage.
Like most birds, pigeons can carry fleas, ticks, or mites. It has been argued that they also carry diseases which can be transmitted to humans through direct contact with either the birds or their feces but these reports seem to be largely unsubstantiated. Their droppings however can damage the paint on your car or the finish on a building, and their highly-flammable nesting materials can clog up drains and vents.
To get rid of pigeons
· Place mothballs around your balcony and in your eaves. Pigeons hate the smell and will not linger.
· Knock down any pigeon nests you find.
· Place "scare devices" out to scare pigeons. These can include plastic owls or snakes.
· Block eaves, ledges and other places pigeons nest by placing wire over these areas. Pigeons are looking for a place to roost and nest. If they cannot gain access to these areas they will not hang around too long.
· You can purchase liquids and gels that you can apply to your roof and balcony. These products are sticky and pigeons do not like to stand and walk on them.
· Another alternative to keep pigeons away is to install bird spikes. These spikes are made of plastic and they deter pigeons from roosting over your building.
Other recommendations
Try using sticky chemicals that will feel be very uncomfortable for birds to perch on, that they will stay away. Buy these at places that sell pest control products.
Eliminate pigeons with ultrasonic devices, if you find it difficult to get rid of them any other way. These devices have been found to work well in lofts or high ceilings of warehouses, dry-docks or other large indoor areas that have high spaces.
Do not make your home or area a place where pigeons get fed. Never feed them, or allow bird feeders to remain on your property.
Spray pigeons with water from a garden hose and while it may not work, it is worth trying to install reflective tape, noise devices or foil balloons and try to scare the pigeons. away.
