What is ringworm infection?

Ringworm is a fungal infection. It is contagious and appears on the skin with spots around the edges, red rings and scaling. It is easy to get ringworm, but how to get rid of ringworm is the hardest to do. Getting rid of ringworm isn’t a difficult task at all. It’s the itchiness and the pain of a ringworm infection that’s difficult to deal with.

Is there any cure?

Getting rid of ringworm isn\'t a difficult task at all. It\'s the itchiness and the pain of a ringworm infection that\'s difficult to deal with. Ringworm, in fact, has nothing to do with worms at all. If anything, ringworm is more closely related to athlete\'s foot and jock itch, because it\'s a type of fungal infection called "Tinea," which is why I\'ve decided to file this article under personal hygiene, along with Athlete\'s Foot.

Common symptoms of ringworm include: a circular rash inflamed around the edges, itchiness, and scaling skin around the rash. Rarely does a ringworm infection get out of hand, but if it does, and your ringworm isn\'t responding to any of the treatments I\'ve outlined below, it would be a good idea to go see your doctor and get a prescription medication (topical or oral) that will more effectively cure your ringworm infection. If you don\'t feel like you need to see a doctor, and you want to get rid of ringworm yourself, here are some practical suggestions for doing so.

Ways to get rid of ringworm

Keep cool, dry, and clean to avoid a ringworm infection. Yes, because it\'s a fungal infection, ringworm can be avoided by staying clean and dry. Don\'t wear heavy clothing that doesn\'t breathe well for very long, and whatever you do, don\'t forget to wear flip-flops in the shower if you live in a dormitory. Ringworm thrives in warm, humid places, so it\'s best to avoid them or at least protect yourself if you can\'t avoid them. Oh, and wash your hands!

You should part back a section of hair so you can see the scalp. Look for one or several round patches of redness with spots around the edges, red rings or scaling skin. Take your child to the family doctor or pediatrician if you spot any of these symptoms. The doctor may prescribe medication to be taken for up to four weeks. Apply over-the-counter cream to your child\'s scalp for small patches of ringworm. Shampoo your child\'s hair two to three times a week.

In some cases Selsun Blue works well, but it can be very irritating to children and people with tender skin. Try using the over-the-counter creams with your usual shampoo. Let school or day care officials know your child has ringworm. Use different combs, brushes, hats, caps, hair bows and hair clips for each family member. Check each member of the household for ringworm, including pets. Wash your hands after you touch your child\'s scalp. Ask your child to wash his hands frequently, especially after he brushes his hair.
