What are they?
Blackheads are symptoms of the very common skin problem known as acne. It is caused by over-active sebaceous glands of the skin. The excess oil secreted leads to clogged pores. The combination of oil and dead skin cell hardens and is called plug. The plug stops sebum from reaching the surface of the skin and allows bacteria Propionibacterium acnes (P. acnes) to grow.
Our skin is exposed to a lot of dirt and grime from the environment. These pollutants also collect in the pores with hardened oil. This causes the pores to be further clogged.
Blackheads occur when the trapped sebum and bacteria partially open to the surface. The clogged oil oxidizes with the air and turns black. The clogged contents may remain for very long as it takes a long time to drain to the surface.
Blackheads are very commonly found in the area across your forehead and down your nose and chin (also known as T-zone). Sebaceous glands on this area of the face are very, very active. However they can also occur on other areas of the face, neck, chest, back, shoulder, even arms – any area that is rich in sebaceous glands.
